John Eggemeyer is a co-founder and Managing Principal of Castle Creek® Capital LLC and Castle Creek
® Financial LLC. Mr. Eggemeyer is on the board of PacWest Bancorp, Guaranty Bancorp and Heritage Commerce. Mr. Eggemeyer is also Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of White River Capital Inc.
Prior to founding Castle Creek
®, Mr. Eggemeyer spent nearly 20 years as a senior executive with some of the largest banking organizations in the United States. During this time he developed managerial skills in commercial lending, problem asset resolution, finance, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, trust and asset/liability management.
Mr. Eggemeyer began his banking career at The First National Bank of Chicago, where he spent over nine years primarily in commercial lending activities. He then spent four years at Norwest Bancorporation, where he became Treasurer, Comptroller and Senior Vice President-Finance. Mr. Eggemeyer then moved to Chemical Bank, where he served as the Director of Finance. He left Chemical Bank to become President of First National Holdings, then the largest bank holding company in Colorado, turning the bank around prior to its sale. He then became Executive Vice President of the First Bank System Inc., and President of its wholly owned subsidiary, First Trust Company, Inc. before moving to Drexel Burnham Lambert, Inc., where he established a financial restructuring group focused on financial institutions.
Mr. Eggemeyer is a Trustee of Northwestern University and a member of the Parent Advisory Board of Stanford University. He is the past President of the Rancho Santa Fe board of Governors, trustee of the Bishop's School and a founder and past President of the Rancho Santa Fe Community School Endowment.
Mr. Eggemeyer holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.
William Ruh is a co-founder and Managing Principal of Castle Creek
® Capital LLC and Castle Creek
® Financial LLC. Mr. Ruh is on the Board of Security Business Bancorp and is a board member of Mocapay, Inc., an early-stage mobile POS payment and mobile marketing technology company. Mr. Ruh has also served as Chairman of the Board and led the extensive restructuring of Ceres Group Inc., a Cleveland, Ohio-based small-cap insurance holding company and as Chairman of the Board and interim CEO for Indivos Corporation, a payment services company utilizing proprietary biometric authentication solutions. Previously, Mr. Ruh also served as a director of Hanmi Financial Corporation, the largest Korean-American bank in the United States, as well as other community banks headquartered in the US.
Prior to co-founding Castle Creek
®, Mr. Ruh was a Vice President at Belle Plaine Financial (the predecessor to Castle Creek
® Financial LLC), acting as an investment banker specializing in the financial services sector. Previously, Mr. Ruh was a commercial lending officer at The First National Bank of Chicago. Prior to that, Mr. Ruh was Director of the Racing Division for Hood Sails (the pre-eminent sail-making firm in the world in the early 1980s) and a Merchant Marine officer. He has represented the United States in three America's Cup campaigns, most recently racing with the winning America3 Foundation in 1992.
Mr. Ruh currently serves as Treasurer and a Trustee on the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation. Mr. Ruh also served as Trustee and as a board member on several other non-profits in North San Diego County.
Mr. Ruh holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York Maritime College and an M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
Mark G. Merlo is a Principal and joined Castle Creek
® in early 1996. Mr. Merlo currently serves on the board of The BANKshares, Inc., Atlanta Bancorporation, Inc., First NBC Bank Holding Co. and Carlile Bancshares, Inc.
Prior to joining Castle Creek
®, Mr. Merlo spent approximately 12 years with several banking institutions, most recently with Mercantile Bancorp, where he was responsible for hedging the bank's loan portfolio and establishing and implementing the bank's portfolio hedging, risk management and portfolio pricing and valuation policies. Prior to Mercantile Bancorp, Mr. Merlo worked at United Postal Bancorporation as Vice President and Investment Portfolio Manager, where he managed the bank's liquidity and asset/liability positions, hedged and sold the bank's mortgage pipeline and created and implemented various investments, new products and funding strategies. He also analyzed and implemented several acquisitions for the bank. He previously served in a similar capacity for Farm Credit Bank of St. Louis where he managed the bank's investment portfolio. Mr. Merlo started his career at First Federal Savings & Loan of Southeast Missouri, where he was an Investment Portfolio and Asset Liability Manager.
Mr. Merlo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Finance from the University of Missouri.
Mike Thomas joined Castle Creek
® in July 2008 as a Principal. Mr. Thomas has 38 years of experience in the banking industry. Prior to joining Castle Creek
®, Mr. Thomas was the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago where he was responsible for strategic leadership and the restructuring of the $80+ billion asset wholesale bank. Prior to that, he spent three years as an independent financial advisor. Mr. Thomas began his banking career at The First National Bank of Chicago, where he spent 21 years in a variety of roles including Treasurer, Chief Financial Officer, co-head of merchant banking and co-head of corporate and institutional banking. He then spent six years at Lazard Freres & Co, where he advised top management and boards of directors on numerous major strategic transactions.
Mr. Thomas is director and the Chairman of the Audit Committee of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare.
Mr. Thomas holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.
John Pietrzak is a Principal and joined Castle Creek® in 2005. Mr. Pietrzak is a board member of West Coast Bancorp, its wholly owned subsidiary West Coast Bank, Square 1 Financial and Panhandle State Bank.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Pietrzak was a Director at Levi Strauss & Co. where he led a team responsible for forecasting demand for the Dockers brand. He was also a Senior Manager of Finance at Levi's. Prior to that, he worked at Diamond Strategy and Technology Consultants, where he assisted clients in developing and implementing strategies in the wireless data industry. Mr. Pietrzak began his career at Sara Lee Corporation where he held positions in a variety of functional areas.
Mr. Pietrzak holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Indiana University and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and is
a CFA charter holder.
David Volk is a Director and joined Castle Creek
® in 2005. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as an associate with TW Associates Capital, Inc., which provides merger & acquisition and corporate financing advisory services to small and middle market companies located primarily in the western United States. While there, Mr. Volk participated in raising equity and debt for a variety of companies. Previously, he worked at Ernst & Young, where he assisted clients with corporate restructurings, capital raising and mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Volk began his career as a financial analyst with TiVo, Inc.
Mr. Volk holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Santa Clara University and an M.S. in Accounting from the University of Virginia.
Tony Scavuzzo, CFA is a Director and joined Castle Creek
® in 2009. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as a corporate financial analyst with MB Financial Bank in Chicago where he was responsible for the identification and evaluation of merger and acquisition opportunities and capital investment strategy for the Bank's executive team. Previously, he worked in the Bank's asset/liability management function where he provided analytical support for balance sheet strategy and managed the Bank's investment portfolio. Mr. Scavuzzo began his career as an investment analyst in the Bank's wealth management group.
Mr. Scavuzzo holds a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Iowa and a M.B.A. in Finance, Accounting, and Entrepreneurship from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is also a CFA Charterholder.
Sundeep Rana is a Director and joined Castle Creek
® in 2011. Prior to joining the firm, he was a Senior Vice President with PCG Asset Management, LLC where he led the identification, analysis, due diligence, and selection of private equity investments, including certain investments that involved the purchase of distressed banks and thrifts from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. While at PCG, Mr. Rana also managed institutional relationships with multi-billion dollar public pension systems, working with both investment staff and Boards of Trustees on issues pertaining to private equity investment selection and portfolio construction. Mr. Rana began his career as an analyst with Goldman Sachs where he focused on company liquidity, capital, and M&A advisory.
Mr. Rana holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.
Daniel J. Davis is a Senior Advisor to Castle Creek
®. Mr. Davis has worked with the Firm on a full-time, exclusive basis for the past 16 years. Mr. Davis has 40 years of experience in the banking industry with a particular focus on acquisition analysis and integration, earnings improvement assessments and implementations and technology reviews. Prior to working with Castle Creek
®, Mr. Davis consulted with other banking institutions for three years. Prior to his consulting work, Mr. Davis was the Executive Vice President of Operations at Cole Taylor Bank in Chicago, IL and Director of Information Services for Key Bank of Utah, where he worked for 18 years.
Martin Szumski joined Castle Creek
® in 2008 as Controller. Mr. Szumski's 19+ year career has been spent in diversified accounting and finance positions leading operational and financial improvements in a variety of industries. Mr. Szumski is also the Chief Financial Officer of White River Capital, Inc., a publicly-traded company, from its inception in 2005. Mr. Szumski worked as a manager at Reese Partners (formerly Reese McMahon LLC) from 1998-2005. During his tenure with Reese Partners, he managed engagements in various industries, including: automobile financing, advertising and manufacturing where he advised clients on financial and accounting matters. Mr. Szumski holds a B.S. degree in Accounting from DePaul University.
Sharon Moody (57) is Director of Compliance. She is responsible for human resources and regulatory compliance. Prior to joining Castle Creek in 1997, Ms. Moody was the Firm Administrator at Phillips & Company, a private accounting firm in Pasadena, California where she managed the company's internal accounting, human resources, property management and client/investor relations. Her previous experience includes ethical pharmaceutical sales (for two of Merck's drugs) and performing medical research at Rush-Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital.
Ms. Moody holds a B.A. in Biology from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL. She did postgraduate work in microbiology at the University of Chicago.
